Ryanair cancels flights in October and announces reduction in number of flights to Porto

Irish airline Ryanair announced this Thursday that it will be forced to cancel flights from the end of October due to delays in deliveries of Boeing aircraft models between September and December.

In a statement released this Thursday, the company’s CEO Michael O’Leary states that “the cancellations will take effect at the end of October and will be communicated to all affected passengers via email in the coming days.”

Affected passengers will be offered re-accommodation on alternative flights or a full refund if they wish.

O’Leary also said that for now the situation is not expected to impact the annual traffic target of 183.5 million, although he acknowledged that if delays worsen or last longer between January and March 2024, the number may have to be increased. revised and adjusted slightly downward.”

The low-cost airline said in a statement that it expects to receive 27 aircraft between September and December, but due to production delays at Spirit Fuselage in Wichita and repair and delivery delays from Boeing in Seattle, it now expects to receive only 14 aircraft. planes from October to December.

Ryanair says it is working with Boeing to try to speed up deliveries between January and May 2024 to kick off the 2024 summer travel peak season with 57 new deliveries planned.

The adjustments Ryanair will make to its winter program this week include the reduction of three aircraft at Charleroi in Belgium, two aircraft at Dublin and five aircraft at four Italian bases including Bergamo, Naples and Pisa.

Without specifying the figure, Ryanair said the number of aircraft would also be reduced in the East Midlands (UK), Porto (Portugal) and Cologne (Germany).

Ryanair is apologizing for these “unavoidable” cuts because it has no spare aircraft for the winter, with its entire fleet of more than 550 aircraft requiring scheduled maintenance to ensure they are available for the “wider summer programme” the carrier is planning for summer.

“We are working closely with Boeing and its supplier Spirit to minimize delivery delays,” Michael O’Leary was quoted as saying in the statement.
