SDP raises potential request to call Secretary of State hearing on IMI

On Tuesday, the SDP raised a potential request for an urgent hearing with the finance minister over a possible increase in IMI after the PS rejected a request from the Social Democrats for the same purpose.

At the meeting of the Committee on Budget and Finance (COF), the PS’s vote against also led to a hearing with Bank of Portugal Governor Mário Centeno, at Cega’s request.

In a statement that the PSD submitted on October 27 to the Budget and Finance Committee, the party admitted that if it fails, it will resort to other measures, which is what happened at the meeting on Tuesday, after the PS voted against and despite the vote for Supporter – Chega and the Liberal Initiative.

By continuing to submit a potential request, the PSD guarantees that Finance Minister Nuno Santos Félix will be heard at the CC, with the hearing to take place no later than January 10, as stated in Lusa – Social Democratic MP Hugo Carneiro.

Setting a date for the hearing now depends on the governor’s agenda, Hugo Carneiro said, indicating it could therefore happen as early as next week.

The request for an urgent hearing is based on statements by the Minister of Finance in an interview with Jornal de Negócios and Antena 1, in which he said that there were plans to review the coefficients that determine the valuation of city buildings. , taking into account that there is a “skew from the VPT” [Valor Patrimonial Tributário] real estate in relation to the reality of the market.”

“He was very adamant: he said it was an ongoing process and that it would happen. This leads us to the conclusion that the government is directly or indirectly preparing to increase IMI (municipal property taxes),” he warned at the time. , in the statements of Luse, Hugo Carneiro.

Hugo Carneiro also pointed out the “contradiction” between these statements by the Secretary of State and those of Finance Minister Fernando Medina during parliamentary hearings discussing the 2024 state budget, who assured that the IMI would not increase next year.

“There is no increase in IMI in OE2024, nor is there anything that I can prescribe in the future,” the minister said.

The PS’s no vote also failed today due to Chega’s request for an urgent hearing from Bank of Portugal Governor Mario Centeno.

In this request, voted in favor by the PSD, Chega and IL, the party led by André Ventura demanded to hear Centeno after it became known that his name had been nominated as António Costa’s successor as head of government following his resignation by the current Prime Minister.
