Brazilian MP condemns law requiring fetal photographs to be viewed before abortion

This Friday, Brazilian MP Erica Hilton filed a complaint with the Ministry of Justice against a law that obliges women to view photographs of the fetus before having an abortion, passed by the city council of Maceio, a city in the northeast of the country.

The rule, published Wednesday in the Official Gazette of Maceió, establishes the duty of public authorities to “guide and educate pregnant women about the risks and consequences of the abortion procedure,” which includes the presentation of images of “fetal development.” week after week.”

It also requires government officials to inform women about the possible side effects of abortion, including depression, unmotivated crying, fears, nightmares and feelings of remorse and guilt.
