According to data provided to Lusa this Monday by Mozambique’s state-owned company, Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) carried more than 600,000 passengers in 2023, an increase of 8% compared to the previous year.
LAM said the figures were driven by regional traffic, which grew 48% year-on-year, rising from 75,481 passengers in 2022 to 111,335 from January to November, according to the latest data provided by Lusa.
Domestic traffic over the same period increased by 2% to 490,132 passengers. According to LAM, 601,467 passengers were carried worldwide between January and November.
During the same period in 2023, LAM’s top routes were Maputo – Beira (35,352 passengers), followed by Nampula – Maputo (35,221 passengers) and Beira – Maputo (35,074 passengers).
The company also says it has improved operational punctuality, which increased from 73% in 2022 (January to December) to 78% in 2023 (January to November).
LAM’s flight network covers 12 domestic destinations, as well as Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam, Harare, Lusaka and Cape Town on regional routes, operating over 40 flights daily on one Boeing 737, three Bombardier Q400s, two Bombardier CRJ 900s and two Embraer 145s operated by MEX subsidiary Moçambique Expresso.
The new destinations of Cape Town, South Africa and Lisbon, launched in December, are part of the operator’s revitalization plan after South African company Fly Modern Ark (FMA) took over LAM in April 2023.
LAM intends to double its fleet to at least 22 aircraft by 2027, the management of the Mozambican flagship company previously told Lusa.
