The PSP has detained 430 people on the mainland and the islands of Madeira and the Azores, more than 100 of them for traffic offences, during Operation Safe Carnival 2024, which ends on Tuesday, the corporation said.
The PSP statement explained that of the 104 arrests for traffic offenses between Feb. 5 and Feb. 11, 56 were for driving while intoxicated and 48 were for not having a valid driver’s license.
45 people were also arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking and more than 15 thousand individual doses were seized.
The PSP also detained 35 people for property crimes and issued 155 arrest warrants.
During the same period, 39 firearms and 22 bladed weapons were seized either as a precaution or following 13 arrests made for possession of prohibited weapons.
Since the start of the operation, the PSP has inspected 9,225 drivers throughout the country and in its intervention area and monitored 43,639 vehicles using radar.
A total of 2,203 administrative offenses were recorded, of which 402 were for speeding, 76 for drunk driving, 208 for lack of mandatory periodic technical inspection, 74 for lack of insurance and 41 for using a mobile phone while driving.
There were 1,038 accidents reported, resulting in two deaths, five serious injuries and 326 minor injuries.
In a note published this Monday, PSP calls on all drivers to adapt their driving to weather and road conditions, emphasizing the importance of reducing speed and avoiding the consumption of alcoholic beverages, thereby avoiding the two main causes of accidents. bus station.
