PAN welcomes proposal to stop using horses in carriages

The head of the PAN list for the European elections, Pedro Fidalgo Márquez, welcomed this Friday the proposal of the national animal supplier to ban the use of horses in carriage rides in 2025.

“We are very pleased that the animal supplier has followed the various proposals of PAN to stop the exploitation of animals in carts, that is, in horse-drawn carts, which is animal torture,” said the candidate at the end of the tour of Aveiro. Ria on board a solar-powered boat.

Pedro Marques said there was an urgent need to end this type of animal exploitation and “stop seeing horses pass out from thirst due to extreme temperatures”, adding that he hoped the government and parliament would follow the recommendations.

“This is not the tourism we want for Portugal. The tourism of the future and what tourists themselves are looking for in Portugal is nature tourism that preserves biodiversity, our animals, in which we can take these walks and these boat rides with laughter,” he emphasized.

The candidate also defended the desire to restore nature to grow the economy and argued that it was possible to combine tourism activities with nature conservation, citing as an example the case of the company Sterna, which promotes tours of the Ria de Aveiro on board a solar-powered boat.

During the tour, candidate and party representative Ines Sousa Real listened to Sandra Oliveira, owner of the company Sterna (named after a seabird found in Ria Aveiro), explain the evolution of the salt from Ria Aveiro.

Currently, according to Sandra Oliveira, there are only five operating salt fleets, a far cry from the roughly 300 that existed in the past.

“This is a wonderful reality that is being abandoned year after year and we have fewer and fewer people in the salty Ria de Aveiro because it no longer pays off financially,” said the person in charge, despite rumors that there are two more navies this year, which makes her believe in a “bright future.”

Established in December 2019, Sterna is dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity through marine and nature tourism in Ria de Aveiro.

The company operates an average of five flights a week, and the majority of customers are foreigners who come “looking for something different.”
