Joana Marques Vidal, former Attorney General of the Republic, has died. She was 68.

Former Attorney General of the Republic Joana Marques Vidal died on Tuesday at the age of 68 at the São João Hospital in Porto, where she had been in a coma for several weeks.

The former prosecutor was in an induced coma after cancer surgery and eventually developed sepsis.

In 2018, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa awarded the former PGR the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Christ. The ceremony was attended by Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues and António Costa.

According to a family source, the funeral service for Joana Marques Vidal will take place on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. in the village of Pedasães, in the municipality of Águeda, in the district of Aveiro.

Joana Márquez Vidal was the first woman to head the Attorney General’s Office, from 2012 to 2018, and was succeeded in this post by Lucilia Gago.

She was appointed to the PGR in October 2012 by then President of the Republic Cavaco Silva, taking over the position previously held by Pinto Monteiro.

Joana Marques Vidal was born in Coimbra, where she was born in 1955. She graduated in law in 1978 and joined the prosecutor’s office the following year.

On Wednesday, the wake will take place at 2:00 pm at the São Lourenço Chapel, in Pedàçais, in Águeda, and on Thursday, the funeral will take place at the crematorium in Aveiro.

The House of Agueda has declared two days of municipal mourning: Wednesday and Thursday.

Reactions

The President of the Republic has already responded to the death of the former Prosecutor General of the Republic.

A President-Lawyer Fernanda de Almeida Pinheiroexpressed “deep shock” on Tuesday over the death of Joana Marques Vidal, saying she “brilliantly carried out her duties” as Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) and that she was “a great servant of justice.”
