President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian troops are ready to launch a counteroffensive and regain the territory occupied by Russia. The Ukrainian leader stated this in an interview with an American newspaper. Wall Street Journal that he believed in the victory of the country, but the support of the West was necessary for the effect.
“We firmly believe that we will succeed. I don’t know how long it will take. To be honest, it could go different, completely different. But we will do it and we are ready.”
Zelensky stressed that Ukraine needs military assistance and support from Western countries to end the war. “It’s a matter of values and power. Everyone knows that a counteroffensive without air superiority is very dangerous,” he said.
Last month, the Ukrainian president issued an address in which he made it clear that Ukraine needed more weapons and tanks to be able to launch a counteroffensive. “I want the war to end as soon as possible,” he said.
Back in an interview, Zelensky mentioned that the country would not be able to join NATO while the conflict with Russia lasted. “We don’t want to be NATO members during the war,” he stressed.
The war in Ukraine broke out on February 24, 2022. 15 months later and with no sign of an end, thousands have died and several cities have been destroyed.
