The Social Democratic Party (PSD) today expressed “deep regret” over the death on Saturday of Elvas city council member Paula Calado in a car accident.
The board member, elected in 2021 by the PSD/CDS-PP coalition and head of the Culture and Tourism Department, “reminds everyone who crossed paths with her,” PSD stresses in a note sent to the press.
“There were several positions in the SDP that she held throughout her life. Faced with this news that took everyone by surprise, she is sure that her smile is not enough for everyone who crossed paths with her. At this moment of great shock, the PSD expresses its most sincere condolences to all relatives and friends,” write the Social Democrats.
The Council of Elvas of the Socialist Party (PS), who currently heads the municipality, also “deeply” regretted the death of Paula Calado, who in a social media post acknowledged “the desire to do more and better for Elvas, strength, determination and work for the good of the elves” .
Also on Saturday, shortly after the councilor’s death was made public, the Elvas Chamber, led by socialist José Rondao Almeida, declared three days of municipal mourning from today to Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Caixa Geral de Depósitos joined the municipal mourning and postponed the conference “Alentejo: the economics of culture as an element of regional advancement”, which was scheduled for Monday at the Elvas border business center.
A source in the municipality confirmed to Lusa today that “the opening of the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art” and “all events scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled.”
Chamber councilor Elvas (Portalegre) Paula Calado, 52, died on Saturday after being involved in a car accident the day before.
Currently, Paula Calado was responsible for the departments of the Department of Culture and Tourism, as well as for all translations received by the Municipality (Castelo), the Office of Forte da Graça and Fort de Santa Luzia, the Municipal Museums, the Elvas Dr. Municipal Library. Elsa Grilo and Arquivos coordinating the Elvas World Heritage and Agricultural Fair.
According to the municipality, “a teacher trained in teaching Portuguese and English at the University of Évora, before taking up executive functions in the municipality of Elvas, taught at the D. Sancho II High School in Elvas and at the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.” .
At the political level, the mayor “was part of the leadership of Rui Río and was part of the Chairman of the Council of the SDP District Assembly”.
Contacting Lusa, a source in the municipality said the council member died at the São José hospital in Lisbon, where she was taken by helicopter after the motorcycle she was riding crashed at Estrada Nacional 4, in the municipality of Arraiolos (Évora ).
The same source said that the driver and “the mayor’s companion also suffered serious injuries and were taken to Évora hospital.”
