Embraer, the Brazilian company that manufactured the crashed plane carrying Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, said the aircraft had not been serviced since 2019 due to sanctions imposed on Russia.
According to Reuters, the sanctions prevent Western aircraft manufacturers from supplying parts or maintaining aircraft operated in Russia.
The aircraft, manufactured in 2007, was sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2019 when it was registered under the earlier M-SAAN registration, according to a US government press release.
The company noted that in 20 years only one accident occurred with the aircraft model and this was not due to a mechanical failure.
The Russian Aviation Agency on Wednesday evening assured that the leader of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, died in a plane crash that occurred late in the evening on the outskirts of the Russian capital Moscow.
