Russian nationalist militias fighting alongside Ukrainian forces said Tuesday they killed two Russian intelligence agents during an incursion into Russian territory.
The Russian volunteer corps, which made an armed incursion into the territory of the Russian Federation, reported that the action took place in the Bryansk region, bordering northern Ukraine.
The governor of the Bryansk region, Alexander Bogomaz, said on Monday evening that the Russian army and troops of the Federal Security Service (FSB) had prevented an attempted sabotage by Ukrainian special services on Russian territory.
The governor’s account was rebutted by police in a social media statement quoted by the Spanish news agency EFE, in which he ironically hailed the FSB “for yet another successful operation.”
The group further argued that the two allegedly killed Russian agents were shot dead by the police themselves, and not by the Ukrainian sabotage group mentioned by the Bryansk governor.
In recent months, Russian authorities have condemned several sabotage attempts, which they attribute to Ukrainian forces, in the Russian regions bordering Ukraine, in Belgorod and Bryansk, which have resulted in several civilian deaths.
The Russian Volunteer Corps and the Legion of Freedom for Russia, another militia of Russian émigrés, held the most notorious action on March 22 and 23, when they managed to control several objects in Belgorod for several hours.
Although Kyiv claims to have nothing to do with these actions, both formations use equipment from the Ukrainian army, in some cases Western-made.
According to EFE, these two militias are also authorized to carry out these attacks from Ukrainian territory.
The information released by Ukraine and Russia about the course of the war launched by Moscow on February 24, 2022 cannot be immediately verified by independent sources.
Ukraine is receiving weapons from Western allies, who have also imposed sanctions on Moscow in an attempt to limit its ability to fund the war effort.
The official number of civilian and military casualties from the conflict is not known, but some sources, including the UN, admit it will be high.
