Heads of state and government representatives from about 100 of the 134 G77+China members begin a two-day meeting this Friday in Havana to promote a “fair” international order for developing countries.
“Current development challenges: the role of science, technology and innovation” is the theme of the event, which precedes the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place between the 19th and 26th in New York, but reforms of multilateral institutions will also occupy debate.
Among the more than 30 heads of state who confirmed their presence in Havana are the presidents of Angola João Lourenço, Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, and Timor-Leste Foreign Minister Bendito Freitas. and government representatives from almost all CPLP member states.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will open the meeting after he said in a message to this week’s G77+China summit that “it is essential that developing countries fight to ensure the necessary transformation in international relations.” systems to create conditions that allow them to confront challenges and restore the pace of their development.”
The summit highlights Cuban diplomacy as Cuba assumes for the first time the interim presidency of the G77+China group, which since the beginning of the year has emphasized in its mandate the urgency of reforming the multilateral financial system.
Developing countries are demanding a strengthened global financial safety net, as well as wider and fairer access to international finance during the crisis, namely through the regular issuance of Special Drawing Rights, and another of their biggest concerns is the problem of debt.
They also want changes in the governance of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that would allow them to expand their participation in those bodies.
The Group of 77 was created in 1964 within the UN, within the group of non-aligned countries, by 77 developing countries. This Friday it has 134 members. China, which does not consider itself a member of the group, has been a member of the G77 since 1992.
