More than 253,000 voters are convened this Sunday to vote in Madeira’s regional legislatures to choose the archipelago’s new parliament, with 13 candidates in the race.
The 292 polling stations, distributed across 54 parishes in 11 municipalities of the archipelago, will be open from 8:00 to 19:00.
According to the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, there are 253,865 registered voters, of which 248,519 are on the island of Madeira and 5,346 on the island of Porto Santo.
Compared to previous legislative elections, 3,893 fewer voters were registered in 2019: Madeira Island lost 4,087 people and Porto Santo gained 194.
At stake are 47 seats in the regional parliament, for which two coalitions and 11 other parties are fighting in one district: PTP, JPP, BE, PS, Chega, RIR, MPT, ADN, PSD/CDS-PP (Somos Madeira coalition). , PAN, Livre, CDU (PCP/PEV) and IL.
In the regional legislative assemblies, the representative of the Republic (the position held by Ireneu Barreto) proposes to the political force to form a government based on the results (which must be published) after consultation with the parties with parliamentary seats in the current legislature.
Four years ago – when abstentions stood at 44.5% – the Social Democrats elected 21 deputies, losing for the first time the absolute majority they had held since 1976, and formed a coalition government with the SDS-PP (three deputies).
The PS received 19 mandates, the AKP – three and the CDU – one.
This year’s candidates are led by Quintino Costa (PTP), Elvio Souza (JPP), Roberto Almada (BE), Sergio Goncalves (PS), Miguel Castro (Chega), Roberto Vieira (RIR), Walter Rodriguez (MPT), Miguel Pita. (ADN), Miguel Albuquerque (Somos Madeira), Monica Freitas (PAN), Thiago Camacho (Livre), Edgar Silva (CDU) and Nuno Morna (Illinois).
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, for the first time in regional elections, “security seals will be used to guarantee the security, closure and sealing of ballot boxes that will be installed at polling stations.”
