NASA will build houses for human habitation on the Moon in the next decade. The goal, which may seem ambitious to some, is for the buildings to be ready by 2040, the newspaper reports. New York Times.
For the project, dubbed Olympus, the space agency will send a 3D printer to the moon and then build the structures.
ICON, the company that uses this printer, has partnered with NASA to prepare Project Olympus. To date, the company has built hundreds of structures using this machine on Earth. In 2022, it received $57 million (equivalent to about 55,000.00) to build construction systems using lunar resources.
The houses will be made from lunar concrete, a material created from rock fragments found in the craters of the natural satellite.
“It’s like a dream,” one of the people responsible for the project told a North American newspaper.
Among the various obstacles to building houses on the Moon is the toxic dust present in this environment. But this factor was taken into account and the ideas for houses, roads and runways have been worked out for the last four years.
The 3D technology is expected to be sent to the Moon in February 2024.
