Iranian pop singer advocating ‘optional burqa’ released on bail

Iranian pop singer Mehdi Yarrahi was released on bail on Tuesday after being arrested in August for broadcasting a song against the compulsory Islamic hijab, local media reported.

Iranian authorities arrested the 41-year-old artist on “orders of a Tehran prosecutor” after the “illegal broadcast of a song” challenging “the morals and customs of Muslim society.”

“Medi Yarrahi has been released on bail from Evin prison,” Iranian newspaper Sharkh reported.

The singer released the song Rousarito (Your Scarf in Persian) on the anniversary of the death of young Kurdish Mahsa Amini, who died on September 16, 2022 after being detained by the morality police on charges of violating the established dress code. on women.

Hundreds of people, including military personnel, were killed during the protests sparked by Amini’s death, and thousands of protesters were also arrested and accused of participating in “riots” instigated by Western countries.

Yarrahi released the song and its three-minute video in favor of the “optional veil”, dedicating it to the “courageous Iranian women” who participated in the protest movement after the death of Mahsa Amini.

The singer won the award for best pop singer at the Fajr festival, the country’s largest music event organized by the government.

Mehdi is also known for criticizing the authorities at his concerts, especially for discrimination against residents of his homeland, Khuzestan province.

The song Soroode Zan (“Women’s Anthem” in Persian), released in early October, has become an anthem for protesters, especially at universities.
