According to government forecasts accessed by Lusa this Friday, Mozambique expects to hit a new gold production record in 2024 of more than 1.5 tonnes, which would represent a 3% increase over this year’s estimates.
“The gold production plan indicates an increase of 3% compared to forecasts for 2023,” said documents supporting the 2024 Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) proposal.
The document adds that this expected growth is due to “increased control over artisanal mining” and due to the “positive performance of mining companies” in the country.
“More attention is paid to the company Explorator, Lda., due to the fact that in one of the areas of geological exploration the company has Mutapa Mining Processing, Lda. On the other hand, we have the resumption of activities of the KD company. Prospero”, read – if it is still in the document.
For next year, the production forecast is set at 1,583 kilograms of gold, compared to 1,537 kilograms this year and 1,087 kilograms in 2022. Mozambique’s official gold production was 764.4 kilograms in 2021 and 487.9 kilograms in 2020, according to government data.
Overall, the Mozambican government expects growth of 18.6% in the mining sector in 2024, “which includes increases in the production of most minerals of high importance in the global structure, namely gold, heavy sands, graphite and thermal coal.”
Mozambique’s gold production rose 53% in the first quarter of the year compared with the same period in 2022, to 346.3 kilograms, according to official data previously reported by Lusa.
According to the economic and social balance of government budget execution from January to March 2023, this production represents 26% of the total expected for this year and is comparable to the 226 kilograms of gold mined in Mozambique in the first quarter of 2022.
