The municipality of Braga was recognized in Dubai by the United Nations (UN) with the Global Green City Award, which rewards commitment to sustainable development, the city council said this Sunday in a statement.
This award places Braga in a limited group of cities that are outstanding throughout the world: Vienna (Austria), Vancouver (Canada), Auckland (New Zealand), Curitiba (Brazil), Nantes (France), Mannheim (Germany) and Yokohama (Japan), second place. added the same press release.
The award was presented by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS 2023) in collaboration with the UN during the 18th annual session of the Forum, held this Sunday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, under the theme “Transforming Green Cities”. “Fair and reasonable: synergistically accelerating the 1.5°C target and the Sustainable Development Goals,” the statement said.
The jury evaluated 85 indicators in several categories, highlighting Braga’s “excellent performance in key areas that contribute to its status as a green model”, the municipality emphasized.
This award recognizes “Braga’s comprehensive approach to sustainable development, covering factors such as energy, public space policy, sustainable land use, water management, innovation strategy and heritage protection,” the same source emphasized.
Mayor Ricardo Rio said in a statement that the award “confirms Braga’s unwavering commitment to building a sustainable future for its residents.”
