Finnish Interior Minister Marie Rantanen announced this Thursday that the government has decided to completely close the border with Russia again, hours after opening two border posts with the country.
The opening of the Niirala and Vaalimaa border posts in the south of the country took place this Thursday after Finnish authorities closed the border with Russia two weeks ago due to a wave of arrivals of asylum seekers.
The Finnish Border Guard registered the arrival of more than 50 asylum seekers, leading to the decision announced by Rantanen, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reported.
Finnish authorities announced earlier this week the opening of the border with Russia through the Niirala and Vaalimaa checkpoints, considered the most suitable for both the movement of people and goods.
The Minister of the Interior said that the government will closely monitor the development of the situation at the border and that if the migration phenomenon continues as before the border closure, the border crossing points between Finland and Russia may be closed again.
Two weeks ago, the Finnish government closed all nine border crossing points, a measure that will remain in effect until at least February 18, 2024.
Some countries have taken measures similar to those in Finland due to an increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving at their borders via Russia.
