Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films will return to cinemas in China after three years of unofficial censorship imposed by Beijing authorities.
The information was confirmed this Thursday to the North American Internet news portal Axios by a representative of Walt Disney, the owner of Marvel Studios.
On Tuesday evening, the official Marvel account on the Chinese social network Weibo posted posters for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania with their respective release dates.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania, considered a pivotal film in history and opening the so-called “Phase 5” of the MCU, will be shown on February 17 at the same time as the rest of the world. , while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will open on February 7, four days after it hit theaters around the world.
With this announcement, Chinese audiences will once again be able to enjoy the superhero stories of this Walt Disney franchise after the screening of Spider-Man: Far From Home in December 2019.
Beijing has never officially explained why films such as The Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings were not allowed to be shown in Chinese cinemas.
However, several reasons were cited for this possible veto, such as criticism of the actors or staging of the Asian country’s politics, the stereotypes of Chinese culture presented in some films, or even the LGBT scene.
Beijing limits the number of foreign films shown in theaters with a quota system that only allows 34 productions per year, excluding co-productions.
