Jamila Madeira, Vice President of the Socialist Bench, defended the “transparency” and “legitimacy” of her political path before the PS deputies this Thursday and wept at the end of her speech, the party’s deputies told Lusa news agency.
On Saturday, Correio da Manhã reported that Jamila Madeira has since last March combined the functions and remuneration of an MP with those of a REN consultant. On July 28, the deputy applied to the Transparency Commission of the Statute of Deputies for an opinion on their labor relations.
On Tuesday, the Socialist MP, who is also PS National Secretary for Foreign Relations, announced that she had suspended her employment contract with the REN and that she had taken on an exclusively parliamentary mandate, thereby seeking to end a disagreement over the accumulation of a mandate in the Assembly of the Republic with the mandate of the company’s consultant.
At the end of a speech in which she tried to explain her case to PS deputies, Jamila Madeira was touched, wept, received applause and comforted by colleagues on the bench, according to reports from this Thursday’s meeting.
On the socialist bench, some deputies defended before the Luz agency that Jamila Madeira should suspend her mandate until “the case is fully clarified”, even accepting the thesis of the transparency and legitimacy of her behavior.
Another trend in the PS Parliamentary Group fears that this case will contribute to pressure towards mandatory exclusivity in the exercise of parliamentary functions – something that the Left Bloc defends, for example, but is rejected by the socialists.
In general, Jamila Madeira advocates that there be no “conflict of interest” between her duties at REN and her position as Deputy.
This Wednesday, after an article in the newspaper Público, the deputy and vice-chair of the socialist bench sent an explanation in which she admitted that for four years, from 2012 to 2015, she was a lobbyist for REN in European bodies. was in the leadership of PS, then led by Antonio José Seguro.
As a Member of the European Parliament between 2004 and 2009, Jamila was a Member of Parliament in the Assembly of the Republic until 2011 when she returned to her original professional career at REN.
The Vice President of the Bench of the Judiciary and National Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the PS also alleges that she “always” met her declarative obligations regarding income, remuneration, assets, incompatibilities and impediments.”
“From 1999 to July 2009, I suspended my professional activities at REW. I suspended my professional activities again in November 2009 until April 26, 2011. Finally, I suspend my professional duties again from January 1, 2023, information contained in my declarations of interest. delivered to the TK,” the deputy wrote in an explanation sent to Público.
