According to local press reports, William Lai Ching-te, a pro-Taiwan independence candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (PDP), won the presidential election.
Lai Ching-te (40%) is estimated to have a lead of seven percentage points over Hou Yu-yih (33%), the opposition Kuomintang Party candidate. Taiwan People’s Party candidate Ko Wen-je gets 26%.
The elections come at a time of tension with China. Beijing fears that Lai Ching-te’s victory will mean a step towards Taiwanese independence. The NDP, now in power, has traditionally been pro-independence.
The candidate of the Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan’s main opposition party, Hou Yu-yi, who advocates rapprochement with China, has already admitted defeat.
“I respect the final decision of the Taiwanese people (…) Congratulations to Lai Ching-te and Hsiao Bi-him [parceira de candidatura presidencial] for their elections, hoping that they will not disappoint the expectations of the Taiwanese people,” said Hou Yu-ih, who finished second in the vote count with 33% of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission, along with his supporters.
