The debt of families, companies and the state rose to 806.7 billion euros in November

The debt of the non-financial sector, which brings together public administrations, companies and individuals, increased by 5.964 million euros in November compared to the same period last year, to 806.705 million euros, the BdP said on Tuesday.

Compared to October, this figure increased by 1.405 million euros, according to a statistical information note published on Tuesday on the Banco de Portugal (BdP) portal.

At the end of November 2023, the debt of the private sector was 449.536 million euros, the public sector – 357.169 million euros, and individuals – 149.979 million euros.

Public sector debt rose by 4.595 million euros compared to November 2022, compared with an increase of 299 million euros compared to the previous month, according to data published by the BdP on Tuesday.

According to the BdP, public administration debt increased by 2,600 million euros compared to October, “partially offset by a reduction in debt abroad (2,200 million euros),” a decline that the central bank said was “affected by the partial repayment of European Financial Stability Mechanism loans (MEEF) in the amount of approximately 1,500 million euros.

In the case of the private sector, the annual increase was 1.369 million euros, while compared to October the increase was 1.107 million euros, “reflecting an increase in the debt of private companies by 1.000 million euros, mainly taking into account from abroad in the form of loans and short-term debt valuable papers”.

Among private companies, despite an increase of 70 million euros compared to October, debt decreased by 868 million euros compared to November 2022.

On February 22, the BdP updated statistics regarding financial sector debt.
