A man with Down syndrome and dementia died after nine days without food due to a medical error in a hospital in Dorset, England. According to BBCThe notes indicated that the patient could not be fed orally due to difficulty swallowing, but liquid nutrition was also not prescribed.
The 56-year-old was under the care of his parents at all times and was taken to Poole General Hospital for treatment of a broken hip. The incident occurred in 2021, but only now the family received compensation in the amount of about 14 thousand euros from the hospital department.
According to the family’s lawyer, there was a serious communication failure that worsened the health of the user, who later died of pneumonia.
In response to the family’s complaint, the country’s health authorities said that “it appears that the breach of duty contributed to the deterioration of living conditions” leading to the patient’s death.
The chief executive of Dorset University Hospitals also expressed her condolences to loved ones and made it clear that new changes had been made to ensure something similar did not happen again.
