Foreign Minister João Gomes Craviño held Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for the death of Alexei Navalny, one of Russia’s main opponents.
“I pay tribute to Alexei Navalny, who resisted the Putin regime and fought for democracy in Russia. Putin used his arbitrary powers to imprison him under increasingly draconian conditions and is responsible for his death. My condolences to his family and the Russian people,” the message says. The minister shared the post on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Alexei Navalny, 47, has been one of the most vocal opponents of Vladimir Putin’s presidency, devoting much of his life to trying to expose the Russian leader.
The activist died this Friday in a penal colony in the Arctic, where he was transferred in December after a stay in a prison in the Vladimir region, less than 200 kilometers from Moscow.
