Airport El Prat Barcelona was on high alert this morning due to a possible radioactive leak from carry-on luggage on an Air Baltic plane departing from Zurich, Switzerland.
According to El PaisThe suitcase contained medical equipment and was believed to be radioactive. The alarm came at about 10:20.
According to the Spanish newspaper, Civil Protection activated the alarm of the Catalan Aviation Emergency Plan and the Catalan Special Radiation Emergency Plan, which checked the package. They considered that if any spill had occurred it would have been “low intensity”, but passengers were not allowed to disembark until authorities had ruled out any type of risk.
Aena guarantees that the incident has not affected operations and flights at El Prat Airport.
The alarm was turned off at 13:30, no incidents were recorded.
