The traffic closure on Avenida D. Carlos I in Porto has been extended for the second time this week due to bad weather: the road is closed to traffic until Tuesday, the city council announced this Sunday.
“For precautionary reasons and to ensure the safety of people and goods, vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Avenida de Dom Carlos I in the Barra do Douro area will continue to be disrupted,” reads a note published this Sunday on the Chamber’s website Porto.
According to the municipality, “traffic on Avenida D. Carlos I will be restored as soon as sea conditions allow, with a reassessment of the situation on the 27th” on Tuesday.
On Thursday, Porto City Council had already extended until this Sunday the period during which vehicular and pedestrian traffic along Avenida de D. Carlos I will be disrupted due to heavy seas, which will also block access to the beaches.
Traffic in the area was disrupted from 8pm on Wednesday and the reduction was initially planned only until Saturday.
Municipal Civil Protection reminds that, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), periods of rain, sometimes heavy, are expected this Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00, with a Yellow Warning in effect.

Regarding sea disturbances, Porto “is under an orange warning issued due to the forecast of waves from the northwest measuring five to six meters, which could reach a maximum height of 11 meters, between 6 am on the 26th and 3 hours in February. 27th, Tuesday.”
“Given IPMA forecasts, the risk of coastal flooding is expected to increase during periods of high tide,” recommending municipal civil protection to the public to take “the necessary preventive and protective measures and adopt appropriate behavioral measures that will minimize the existing risk.”
At stake is respect for the safety perimeters established along the coastline, as well as access to marinas and beaches, caution when traveling near coastlines and coastal areas or engaging in marine-related activities such as sport fishing, water sports or sea trips. Coast.
