The largest donation ever to a US medical school has ensured that from 2024 no student will have to pay tuition to study at Albert Einstein University of Medicine in New York, US. The donation of more than 920 million euros was made by Ruth L. Gottesman, a former university professor.
“This gift radically changes our ability to continue to attract students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it. Additionally, it will liberate and uplift our students, allowing them to pursue projects and ideas that might otherwise not be realized. exorbitant,” university rector Yaron Tomer said in a statement.
This year’s tuition fees for all current fourth-year students will be refunded and all students will receive free tuition fees from August.
Ruth Gottesman used the fortune made by her late husband David “Sandy” Gottesman, a Wall Street financier and early Berkshire Hathaway investor who died in September 2022.
“I am so grateful to my late husband, Sandy, for leaving these funds in my care, and I feel blessed to be privileged to make this donation to such a worthy cause,” she said in a university statement.
Gottesman entered medical school in 1968. While at school, he researched children’s learning difficulties and created a literacy program for adults. He currently serves as chairman of Einstein’s board of directors and serves on the board of directors of Montefiore Health System, an affiliated school hospital.
