The US president opened his annual State of the Union address with a warning about how “freedom and democracy are under attack” at home and around the world.
“We are experiencing an unprecedented moment in the history of the Union. And yes, my goal tonight is to wake up Congress and warn the American people that this is no ordinary moment. Not since President Lincoln and the Civil War have freedom and democracy been attacked here at home like they are today,” Joe Biden said in his third State of the Union address Thursday night.
Biden compared today to the period before World War II, when Adolf Hitler marched across Europe, and believed that now it is Russian President Vladimir Putin who intends to conquer more territory in Europe.
Abortion
The US President has promised to restore Roe v. Wade. “It’s clear that those bragging about overturning Roe v. Wade have no idea about the power of women in America,” he said. Reuters.
Age
Regarding age, 82-year-old Joe Biden said: “In my career, I’ve been told I’m too young and I’ve been told I’m too old. (…) Some people my age see a different story: an American story of resentment and revenge.“.
Vladimir Putin
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Joe Biden compared two former Republican presidents. “Not long ago, Republican President Ronald Reagan said, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.’ Now my predecessor, a former Republican president, tells Putin: “Do what you want.” My message to President Putin, whom I have known for a long time, is simple: we will not give up and we will not bow. I’m not going to bow,” he said.
