The governor of Maryland highlighted the agents’ efforts. “These people are heroes. They saved lives,” Wes Moore said. A group of eight workers, mostly Mexicans and Hondurans, were working on the bridge at the time of the collision. Two were rescued alive, one in serious condition. The remaining six are missing and presumed dead.
Mexican President Andrés López Obrador complained and said migrants often do “risky work” and “don’t deserve this kind of treatment from some politicians.” Authorities are now focusing on finding the bodies.
“Dirty” fuel investigated
US authorities are investigating the cause of the Dali’s collision with the bridge. One hypothesis is the use of “dirty” or contaminated fuel, which could cause engine failure and leave the ship without power. The bridge, opened in 1977, served as part of a state highway, was about 2.7 kilometers long, 55 meters high and had four lanes.
