At the Palace Hotel, a quaint castle with a gothic ambience in the Swiss Alps, the filthy rich from all over the world gather for a New Year’s Eve 2000 party. On December 31, Hansueli (played by Oliver Masucci), a dedicated manager, inspects the staff with almost military zeal. As the dawn of the new millennium approaches, the atmosphere becomes tense. There are rumors of the Millennium Bug and the financial chaos it will bring. Beneath the civilized surface, each character’s story brings to life an absurd, dark and provocative comedy.
Hotel Palace, the new (and, according to many, last) film from the controversial Roman Polanski, 90, opens in Portuguese cinemas today after premiering at the Venice Film Festival and receiving a negative reaction from specialist critics.
The cast includes names such as Fanny Ardant, John Cleese, Mickey Rourke and Portuguese Joaquim de Almeida, who plays plastic surgeon Dr. Lima. The actor admits that he “really enjoyed” working with Polanski, despite being hesitant to accept the director’s invitation. “I read the script and it seemed strange and confusing. I only made this film because it belongs to Polanski.”
