A dog that went missing over the summer in San Diego, California, was found more than 3,200 kilometers from home, in a suburb of the North American city of Detroit, Michigan.
Last week, Harper Woods police responded to a call about an abandoned dog. After rescuing the animal, he contacted an animal welfare group, the Associated Press (AP) reported this Thursday.
The Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society said it quickly discovered that the dog, named Bear, had been implanted with an identification chip containing information about its owners.
Mehrad Howman and her family live in San Diego but were planning to travel to Minnesota when they got the call.
After landing in Minnesota, Howman drove 10 hours to Michigan to be reunited with Mishka, the adoption group said in a Facebook post accompanied by photos and videos.
“This is the story Hollywood would like to tell,” the association said.
Mishka left Howman’s job, an auto repair shop, in July and never returned. This dog’s collar had the family’s phone number on it.
“We think it was stolen and then sold and ended up in Michigan,” said Corinne Martin, director of the animal welfare group.
Howman’s wife Elizabeth said it had been an “incredible journey”.
“I never gave up. I posted over a thousand leaflets. I had a flyer on my back windshield. I took her collar with me whenever I looked for her. Now I just want to know how she got to Michigan,” he stressed.
Veterinarian Nancy Pillsbury examined three-year-old Mishka, gave her a rabies shot and cleared her to go home to California.
“She was clean and well-fed. Whoever took care of her took good care of her,” Pillsbury assured the AP.
“How did you get here? Only Mishka knows this story,” he added.
