Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican embassy where the former vice president was holed up

A group of Ecuadorian police on Friday invaded the Mexican embassy in Quito where Jorge Glas was holed up, hours after Mexico granted political asylum to the former Ecuadorian vice president.

Ecuadorian police broke down the main gate of the diplomatic building and several agents climbed walls and fences. During the operation, security forces blocked traffic on the main avenue leading to the scene.

Police later left the house, which had been under close surveillance by the Ecuadorian military since Thursday evening, the EFE news agency reported.

Mexico suspends relations with Ecuador after invasion of Mexican embassy in Quito

Mexico’s president ordered the suspension of diplomatic relations with Ecuador after police raided the Mexican Embassy in Quito and detained former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas.

“The Ecuadorian police forcefully entered our embassy and detained the former vice president of that country, who was a refugee and in the process of seeking asylum due to the persecution and harassment he faced,” said Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Mexico’s president said on social media site X (formerly Twitter) that the invasion constituted an “authoritarian act” and a flagrant violation of international law and Mexico’s sovereignty.
