A man was killed and his son was wounded this Wednesday as they watched the horse pilgrimage that connects Moita with Viana do Alentejo through the town of Landeira in Vendas Novas. The two victims, aged 56 and 28, were hit by a cart pulled by two horses, which became frightened and attacked the father and son out of control.
According to GNR and fire department sources, the fatal collision occurred at 12:30 pm at the Landeira football field while the animals were being paired up.
Alert about the accident led to the mobilization of dozens of firefighters and an INEM helicopter to rescue the most serious casualty, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The son of the deceased victim was taken to the Évora hospital despite being slightly injured. GNR is now investigating possible liability.
The horse pilgrimage began in Moita on Wednesday and ends next Saturday in Viana do Alentejo. There are 150 kilometers of dirt trails in honor of Our Lady of Eyre.
