Eight areas on the continent are under a yellow warning for Friday and Saturday due to possible snowfall, warns the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which is forecasting spells of rain across the country.
The yellow warning, the least severe on a three-point scale, is in effect from 21:00 Friday to 12:00 Saturday and covers the areas of Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Porto, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real and Viseu.
IPMA forecasts snowfall above 1,100 metres, with accumulations of up to five centimeters at elevations above 1,200 metres. More than 1,200 meters of snow is forecast in Castelo Branco and Guarda districts, with accumulations of up to 10 centimeters above 1,600 meters.
According to IPMA, the likely impacts include disruption caused by snowfall and possible ice formation, leading to, for example, some road closures or restrictions, damage to buildings or trees, and disruption to local supplies.
According to forecasts published on the official website, on Friday the minimum temperature on the continent will range from six to 13 degrees Celsius, and the maximum – from 12 to 20 degrees. The coldest temperatures will be in the northern and central northern and inland regions.
On Saturday, the continent as a whole will experience a drop in temperature: Bragança and Guarda recorded a minimum temperature of three degrees.
