The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced on Tuesday that it had detained two colonels of the Department of State Protection (PARD) on suspicion of involvement in a Russian plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
The SBU said the two were involved in a plot orchestrated by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) through intelligence leaks, and that one of them was caught while traveling to different parts of Ukraine to obtain explosives and information from his contact in Moscow.
“One of the tasks of the FSB intelligence service was to search among the military personnel close to the president’s security for those who could take him hostage and then kill him,” the SBU statement explains.
In addition to President Zelensky, the SBU claims that Russia’s targets also included the head of the Security Service, Vasily Malyuk, and the head of the Defense Ministry’s intelligence services, Kirilo Budanov, who was to be killed before Orthodox Easter this year. celebrated on March 31st.
“The terrorist attack that was supposed to be a gift to Putin before the inauguration” [esta terça-feira efetuada], was essentially a failure of the Russian intelligence services. But we must not forget that the enemy is strong and experienced, and should not be underestimated,” warned SBU head Vasily Malyuk.
