The Israeli Foreign Minister announced this Wednesday the immediate recall of the ambassadors of Ireland and Norway, according to a report Reuters. The decision came after the two countries announced recognition of the State of Palestine, scheduled for May 28. Israel also reprimanded the Spanish ambassadors.
According to Israel Katz, recognition of a Palestinian state jeopardizes efforts to return 128 Hamas hostages in the Gaza Strip.
“Israel will not remain silent. We are determined to achieve our goals: restore the safety of our citizens, eliminate Hamas and return the hostages,” Katz said.
Palestinian extremist group Hamas attributed the decision of Spain, Ireland and Norway to recognize the State of Palestine to the “courageous resistance” of the Palestinian people.
“These consistent recognitions are a direct result of the courageous resistance and historical perseverance of the Palestinian people,” Bassem Naim, a member of the Hamas political cabinet, told French news agency AFP.
Palestinian National Authority (PAN) President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the recognition of the Palestinian state.
The decision “contributes to the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination in their own land and to taking tangible steps to support the implementation of the two-state solution,” the PNP president said in a statement.
