Chinese air and naval forces began military maneuvers around Taiwan on Thursday in what the Beijing regime said would be “severe punishment” for the “separatist actions” of new Taiwan President Lai Ching-te.
The previously unreported maneuvers, which involve dozens of ships and warplanes in addition to ground forces and ballistic missile units, are taking place simultaneously at several locations around the nationalist island, as well as on several islets off the Chinese coast. which is happening for the first time.
According to Taiwanese media, in addition to the usual naval blockades, Chinese troops simulated a “large-scale armed invasion” of Taiwanese territory.
The Taipei government condemned the drills as an “irrational provocation” and put its defense forces on alert “to defend national sovereignty.”
The maneuvers are the communist regime’s response to President Lai Ching-te, who in his inauguration speech on Monday called on China to stop threatening Taiwan and recognize its democracy. a threat to peace and stability in the region.
