More than half of Brazil’s total deforested area in 2023 occurred in the Cerrado, turning the Brazilian biome into the area with the most devastated native vegetation in the country, a place previously occupied by the Amazon, MapBiomas announced Tuesday.
In its Annual Report on Deforestation (RAD), the organization states that Brazil has lost 8,558,237 hectares of native vegetation over the past five years. However, data collected by the same organization showed that 2023 marked a turning point in this process, as an 11.6% reduction in deforested areas was recorded.
A total of 1,829,597 hectares of native Brazilian vegetation were destroyed in 2023, compared to 2,069,695 hectares destroyed the year before. This reduction occurred despite an 8.7% increase in the number of warnings compared to 2022.
