Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed former bodyguard Alexei Dyumin as Secretary of the State Council of the Russian Federation, the Kremlin (presidency) said on Wednesday.
Dyumin, 51, joined Putin’s security team in 1999, and his leap into politics led him to head the special operations unit of the military secret service, Spain’s Europa Press news agency reported.
He also served as Deputy Minister of Defense and Governor of the Tula region, having been appointed as a possible replacement for Sergei Shoigu at the Ministry of Defense.
The Russian State Council is responsible for developing strategic goals for domestic and foreign policy in cooperation with the Kremlin and other administrations.
Putin strengthened the body’s power in a 2020 constitutional reform that allowed him to run for a fifth term.
