According to BFMTV, an 18-year-old Chechen was arrested on May 22 for planning a terrorist attack during an Olympic football match.
The suspect allegedly intended to attack a football match as part of a sporting event at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium in Saint-Etienne.
The young man was placed in preventive custody. According to the French press, the detainee denied this plan, but admitted conversations on encrypted messaging applications.
During police searches, investigators found a photo of the stadium on the young man’s personal computer, as well as a video on his mobile phone.
The detainee has been in France since 2023, when he arrived in the European country accompanied by his parents.
“This is the first thwarted attack on the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris and the 50th thwarted attack by our services since 2017,” emphasizes the French Interior Minister.
