The President of the Republic believes that the Peace Summit in Ukraine, which ends this Sunday in Switzerland, has opened an “unstoppable path” to ending the conflict, but stressed that all parties will need to be involved in the next steps.
Speaking to reporters after speaking at the final plenary session of the summit, which has been taking place since Saturday at the Burgenstock resort, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza considered that the conference was a success “due to its representativeness” and emphasized this idea: In his speech to the remaining representatives of about a hundred countries and organizations, he stated that “this path, this path, this step that was taken today cannot be stopped.”
“This is one step, there are other steps, and at other steps it would be good to expand with new partners, in the expression that the statement is likely to be accepted by “all parties.” [todas as partes]. And I added that, strictly speaking, they should have already been here at this first step, but they could have been here at subsequent steps,” the head of state said.
When asked who else should be involved in this process, Marcelo, without directly mentioning the Russian Federation, replied that negotiations should be extended to “all parties directly involved” in the conflict.
“If this is a conflict, then several parties are involved. And it is impossible to deal with this conflict, to deal with the exchange of prisoners, to deal with the return of deportees, to deal with humanitarian issues, issues that affect the parties involved in the conflict. As for the removal of grains from their places of production, it is very difficult to solve this problem in a peaceful and long-term way without the participation of all parties,” he said.
