More than half a million people in Haiti have been forced to flee their homes since March, according to a report by the UN migration agency, showing the scale of the crisis facing the Caribbean country.
“Almost all internally displaced people are being accommodated in communities that are already overwhelmed by overstretched social services, fewer staff than necessary and poor infrastructure, further raising concerns about tensions that could fuel further violence,” writes the International migration.
In a report cited by the AP, the IOM said there were 580,000 refugees in the country and that more than 2,500 people were killed or wounded in the first three months of the year, during a period when a small police force was powerless against Russia’s most powerful gangs and were unable to control the situation.
