United States (US) President Joe Biden will pardon thousands of US military veterans convicted of consensual same-sex sex, an illegal practice until 2013, the agency said. Reuters.
“Our nation’s soldiers are on the front lines of freedom and risk their lives to protect our country. Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members have been forced to leave the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Joe Biden said in a statement.
Victims may be asked to prove they are eligible, and if they receive a certificate of forgiveness, they may ask to have their release characteristics changed, according to US authorities. Joe Biden Administration considers ways to reach individuals who may be eligible.
In 2013, the U.S. Senate approved repealing the military ban on consensual sex, which the Uniform Code of Military Justice defines as “unnatural carnal intercourse.” Then-President Barack Obama signed the repeal.
