U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced a new $2.3 billion aid package for Ukraine on Tuesday that includes air defense and anti-tank weapons.
“The United States will soon announce more than $2.3 billion (€2.14 billion) in new security assistance for Ukraine,” Austin said at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov at the Pentagon.
“Make no mistake, Ukraine is not alone, and the United States never wavers in its support for us,” the American assured at the beginning of the meeting with Umerov.
The official said that with about 50 more allies and partners, “the capabilities Ukraine needs to repel Russian aggression today and prevent Russian aggression tomorrow” will continue to be provided.
On Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched more than 800 glide bombs in the past week alone and called on national leaders to ease restrictions on the use of Western weapons to strike military targets inside Russia.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine needs “the necessary means to destroy the carriers of these bombs, including Russian combat aircraft, wherever they are.”
Austin did not mention the restrictions in his opening statement, but told Umerov they would discuss “more ways to meet Ukraine’s immediate security needs and build future forces to deter further Russian aggression.”
The conflict in Ukraine began in February 2022.
