Biden vows to return to campaign this week

US President Joe Biden has vowed to “get back to the campaign” this week, despite intense pressure in recent days on him to abandon the White House race.

“I look forward to getting back on the campaign trail next week. There is much at stake, and the choice is clear. Together, we will win,” Biden said in a statement released by his campaign.

The Democratic nominee has spent the past few days isolating at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, after testing positive for Covid-19, as opposition within the party continues to mount. On Friday alone, more than a dozen Democratic members of Congress and senators publicly called on the president to drop out of the presidential race, with speculation swirling that Biden was seriously considering his future. Friday’s announcement, however, seemed to confirm that he intends to continue.

“The president is certainly still in the race, and his will to defeat Trump is stronger than ever,” the spokeswoman said.

Biden feels “angry and betrayed” by important Democratic Party figures like Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama, Hillary and Bill Clinton for not speaking out and defending him explicitly, according to close sources, raising speculation about who will also support his departure.

One adviser even compared the president to Julius Caesar, saying he was being “stabbed in the back and in the front by people who have known him for 30 or 40 years.”

Democratic mistakes
“In 2015, Obama, Pelosi and Schumer sidelined Biden in favor of Hillary; they were wrong then and they remain wrong,” says an ally of the Democratic candidate.
