A powerful explosion has caused a fireball to form on a container ship carrying hazardous cargo at a key port in eastern China, local media reported on Friday.
Security camera footage released by state television CCTV showed a huge explosion of white smoke followed by an orange-yellow fireball that scattered debris and completely engulfed containers stacked at least three metres high.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from the explosion and fire at the Ningbo-Zhoushan port, south of Shanghai and one of the world’s largest. A container exploded on a moored ship, CCTV said.
An aerial photo released by the channel showed black smoke coming from a pile of containers at one end of the ship and from the dock area. The rest of the ship and its containers appeared undamaged.
The Zhejiang Provincial Emergency Management Authority said the ship was loaded with Class 5 hazardous materials, but did not specify what kind.
