French film icon Alain Delon has died aged 88, his three children announced in a joint statement to AFP this morning.
“Alain Fabien, Anoushka, Anthony and (their dog) Loubo announce with great sadness the passing of their father. He passed away peacefully at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family. (.. .) The family kindly asks you to respect their privacy at this time of extremely painful mourning,” the statement, quoted by AFP, read.
A central figure in more than five decades of constant transformation in French cinema, Delon left behind 122 films, 88 of which as an actor, two as a director and 32 as a producer, during a career associated with directors such as Jean-Pierre Melville (The Red Circle, The Silence of a Man), Luchino Visconti (Rocco and His Brothers, The Leopard), René Clément (Under the Full Sun) or Louis Malle.
In terms of awards, since his first appearance on the big screen in 1957, Delon has won the César Award for Best Actor in 1985 for Bertrand Blier’s Our Story, the Honorary Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1995, and the Berlin International Film Festival Award. In May 2019, he received his most notable recognition by receiving the honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes.
“It’s a bit of a posthumous tribute, but in life,” the actor said in the films “Plein Soleil” (1960), which brought him worldwide fame, “Rocco et ses frères” (1960), “Le Guépard” (1963) and “Pisces” (1969).
Also notable are his eight collaborations with Jean-Paul Belmondo, who died in 2021, and it was the failure of the last of these films that marked his gradual retreat from the screen. Since then, Delon has limited himself to episodic appearances, retreating from the limelight.
After making few film appearances since the late 1990s, the actor made headlines in the summer of 2023 when three of his children filed a complaint against their lady-in-waiting, sometimes referred to as his companion, for alleged abuse of her weakness. The controversy erupted over the actor’s health, who had suffered from a number of health issues and suffered a stroke in 2019.
Alain Delon spent the last years of his life on his estate in Duchy (Loire), surrounded by high walls and where he had long planned to be buried, not far from his dogs.
