The National Emergency and Civil Protection Administration (ANEPC) on Tuesday issued a warning to the public about worsening weather conditions until Thursday, rain and strong winds on the continent, accompanied by rough seas.
In a note, ANEPC, based on information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), warns of precipitation forecast throughout the territory, sometimes heavy in Minho and Douro Litoral, especially in the early morning on Wednesday and in the morning light, from the afternoon gradually turning into showers and possible hail in northern and central areas until late Thursday morning (March 9).
During this period, a strong southwest wind is expected, but more intense in the mountainous and coastal strip in the northern and central regions.
As for sea waves, they should gradually increase from Wednesday afternoon, reaching four to four and a half meters on Thursday north of Cabo Raso (Cascais municipality).
In connection with the predicted weather scenario, the civil defense warns of the possibility of flooding of urban areas caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to clogging of drainage systems, as well as the occurrence of floods potentiated by the overflow of the channel of some watercourses, rivers and streams.
Slope instability causing possible landslides and seepage landslides is another ANEPC warning.
The ANEPC also warns against dragging loose objects onto the roadway or tearing off movable or loose structures due to high winds, which could cause accidents with moving vehicles or bystanders on a public road.
It also warns you to take special care while driving due to slippery surfaces and possible formation of water layers.
As a preventive measure, it is recommended to clear drainage systems of rainwater and remove aggregates and other objects that may drag or obstruct water drainage and that provide adequate support for loose structures, such as scaffolding, plaques and other suspended structures.
Authorities are also asking for “special caution” when moving and staying in wooded areas, due to the possible fall of trees or branches due to wind, as well as in coastal areas more vulnerable to flooding watercourses, avoiding circulation. .. and stay in these places.
Motorists are also being asked to drive with caution, slowing down and taking extra care of possible aquifers on roads and not crossing flooded areas.
Do not engage in activities related to the sea, namely sport fishing, water sports and walks along the promenade, as well as avoid parking vehicles very close to the promenade, these are other civil protection tips.
