The unpopular and criticized Biden entrenched on US Election Night

The U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday surprised politicians and analysts by not confirming a “red wave” (the color of the Republican Party) that was said to punish unpopular President Joe Biden for his poor economic performance (inflation at 8.2%, the most the highest figure in almost half a century).

The Republicans should seize control of Congress, but by a narrow margin and only in the House of Representatives, as the Senate could be the biggest surprise and lean towards the Democrats. With a partial result of 49 Republican Senators and 48 Democrats in the upper house of Congress (100 seats), it all depends on the results, which are determined in three states: Arizona (leaning towards the Democrats), Nevada (leaning towards the Republican candidate) and Georgia. The latter is decisive. He must go to the second round on December 6, and only then will it become known who will have a majority in the Senate.

One of the main stars of the Senate race was Democrat John Fetterman. He suffered a stroke and was speechless six months ago, but that didn’t stop him from winning in Pennsylvania, beating cardiologist and TV personality Mehmet Oz, one of several candidates that former President Donald Trump (critics of the electoral process like him) backed that they lost, shattering the ex-president’s hopes for a night of glory that would boost his chances of re-election to the White House.

No one was as excited about the Democrats’ surprise as Biden. During the campaign, he insisted on denouncing Trump and his henchmen as a serious threat to democracy, and the bet paid off. He also made abortion an important election issue and, against all expectations, also won it, as several states passed anti-abortion laws in several referendums. “Fantastic,” the president exclaimed, in blissful contrast to Trump, who, instead of celebrating, simply told reporters, “It was an interesting night.”

DeSantis wins and challenges Trump in presidential race
Former President Donald Trump planned a party for Election Day Tuesday, but the defeat of many of the candidates he supported in the race for Congress and state office left him speechless. To make matters worse, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis confirmed the term in a landslide victory that greatly cemented his credibility and made him a credible contender in the 2024 U.S. presidential race. In fact, he is the only Republican capable of challenging Trump’s hegemony in the party.

The mogul, who is expected to formally nominate himself in the Republican primary next week, has implicitly admitted that he fears losing his nomination as the party’s nominee by multiplying threats to his rival. “I don’t know if he’s going to run, but if he does, he could be in big trouble,” he warned, threatening to reveal compromising secrets about DeSantis, things he called “unflattering” without giving further explanation. Trump even assured: “I know more about him than anyone else, except, perhaps, his wife.”

When Trump was dejected, the party was celebrated by DeSantis, who celebrated in front of a crowd that urged him to run in 2024. The re-elected governor thanked him but did not confirm whether he would run in the primary. Polls place him as the second choice farthest from Trump, but re-election by over 20% propelled him to higher positions.
