Brazilian President Lula da Silva landed in Shanghai this Wednesday, the first stop on his official visit to China. The politician landed at the international airport of the Chinese metropolis at 22:30 local time, at 15:30 Lisbon.
On the podium, Lula and his large retinue were greeted by former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, appointed by his friend for decades as the new president of the BRICS Development Bank, a political and economic bloc made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa South. Dilma Rousseff’s inauguration ceremony is scheduled for this Thursday, April 13, in Shanghai, where the bank is headquartered.
After the ceremony, Lula and his entourage will fly to Beijing, where on Friday the Brazilian will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The agenda of this meeting and trip includes agreements in the areas of trade, defense, technology, the establishment of new partnerships in a number of areas between the two countries and, of course, the war in Ukraine.
This sensitive topic, incidentally, was the subject of an editorial published by the Chinese Communist Party-controlled Global Times, which suggested that Brazil and China could make an important contribution to bringing peace to Ukraine. Lula is the author of a controversial peace plan that, according to the Brazilian, could end the tragic conflict that began on February 24 last year, when Russia invaded Ukraine, but this plan was poorly received by most of Ukraine’s allies and has already been rejected by the authorities of this country, because provides for the exchange of peace for Russian-occupied territories.
In addition to meeting with Xi Jinping and other government officials in Beijing, Lula will also meet with figures and businessmen from this Asian giant. In a vast entourage, Lula hosts more than 40 Brazilian influencers, from Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco, ministers, governors and allied and opposition parliamentarians, as well as almost 200 businessmen in search of opportunities or expansion of existing businesses.
